BINALOUD NEW TOWN (BNT) LIBRARY (BUILT)
Designed and Represented by Mohammad Moezzi in 2018, and Constructed by NET Architects in 2021, Mashhad, Iran
The Binaloud New Town Library reflects a synthesis of Iranian architectural heritage and environmental responsiveness, tailored to its desert location. Drawing on tradition- al badgir (wind towers), I designed the ceiling to incorporate natural light catchers that reinterpret this iconic feature. These el-ements allow diffused sunlight to flood the interior while facilitating passive ventilation and cooling essential strategies for desert climates. By integrating these light catchers, the design reduces reliance on artificial systems, creating a calm, well-lit atmosphere conducive to reading and study.
To mitigate harsh environmental conditions, the library adopts a solid, inward-looking structure with minimal openings, echoing the robust forms of traditional Iranian desert architecture. This solidity preserves thermal comfort and shields occupants from heat, glare, and dust storms. At its heart, the layout draws inspiration from two iconic Persian typologies: the chartaqi and char-eivani. These enclosed, symmetrical spaces provide a sense of protection, contemplation, and adaptability, allowing the library to accommodate diverse uses over time.
The surrounding landscape evokes the Persian garden (bagh), where geometric patterns, greenery, and water features create a tranquil environment for visitors. These outdoor spaces contrast with the solidity of the structure, balancing openness and enclosure, light and shadow.
Constructed with locally sourced brick, the library pays homage to Iran’s architectural traditions while blending seamlessly into its environment. By combining indigenous strategies with contemporary solutions, the design creates a sustainable, climate-responsive space that reflects cultural conti- nuity. The Binaloud Library not only honors the past but also redefines how architecture can engage with place, climate, and community in the context of modern needs.
